NON-TOXIC PLANT BASED DYES

The Problem with Synthetic Dyes

Synthetic dyes are man-made chemicals created for the sole purpose of giving fabrics color.

Because of this, they work really well.

But, also because of this, they aren’t natural, and they tend to be often toxic.

Pros of Natural Dyes

1. Non-toxic – the color is made from foods that sometimes even have medicinal properties.

2. Use less water – cutting down on the garments carbon footprint.

3. Cradle to cradle – the garment can safely decompose without toxins contaminating the soil and groundwater.

Cons of Natural Dyes

1. Cost – natural dyes are more labor and resource-intensive so they cost a lot more.

2. Limited color options – bright neons and bold colors are almost impossible to hit using plants.

3. Limited fabric options – natural and semi-synthetic fabrics (like rayon) are best for natural dyes. Polyester, nylon, and other man-made fibers won’t hold the color.

4. Longevity – natural dyes tend to change color, and fade quickly.
