Modal is actually a type of rayon (like viscose and Tencel). But what makes it special is the system in which it is made.
Modal is made in a semi-closed-loop system, where most of the chemicals left over at the end of the manufacturing process can be reused. This creates a lot less chemical waste than traditional rayon manufacturing.

With the use of chemicals, wood pulp is broken down into a liquid.
That liquid is then extruded through something called a spinnerette, forming fibers.
While Modal is considered a “semi” synthetic fiber, there really is nothing natural about it once the process is complete.
1. Cheaper than silk – with a very similar hand-feel.
2. Vegan – often marketed as “vegan silk.” 3. No deforestation – birch trees grow very quickly.
4. High wet modulus – stronger when wet.
1. Chemical dependency – at the end of the day, it is still a man-made fiber that requires the use of chemicals that are not good for the environment or people working with them.
2. Extremely absorbent – clothing can feel really heavy when the customer sweats.
3. Pills and snags – which can lead to customer complaints, damages, and returns.
This is hard to say…
While some may argue it is not more sustainable than using natural silk. IMO, it is definitely more sustainable than using polyester or nylon.
