Artisan fashion is more than just “handmade”. It is clothing that is created using ancient, low-impact, earth-friendly techniques that have been passed down for generations.
Artisan fashion is not couture. While quality can be extremely high in artisan fashion, it is not held to the same strict requirements as couture fashion.
1. One-of-a-kind unique pieces. Each with a little bit of variation and personality of the artist.
2. Preserve cultures. Many of these techniques go back thousands of years.
3. Creates jobs. Artisan techniques are more labor intensive and require more workers.
4. High skill levels lead to job security. These types of workers is not easily replaceable with cheaper labor.
In general, using artisan techniques requires fewer resources. Many of these crafts are made without the use of electric automated machines and utilize natural processes like drying textiles in the sun.
So why isn’t everyone making artisan fashion?
Many people falsely believe that having their collections made by artisans is appropriation. But, currently, there are more artisans than orders, and they would love to work with you!

1. Block printing. Fabrics are hand-printed using blocks as stamps.
2. Tie-dye. Examples are shibori and bandhani fabrics.
3. Embroidery and beading. Designs are sewn on by hand.
4. Lace making. Is actually a form of hand embroidery.
5. Knitting and weaving. Fabrics are made by people using knitting needles or hand looms.
